Strong Bones Yoga

Six part series

Mondays, 7:15-8:45pm September 13, 20, 27, October 4, 11, 18
or
Fridays, 3:30-5:00pm September 10, 24, October 1, 8, 15, 22
Cost: $55

A study published in Topics in Geriatric Rehabilitation in 2009 found that yoga poses build bone mineral density and concluded “Yoga appears to be an effective way to build bone mineral density after menopause.” This ongoing research is also demonstrating that yoga, properly practiced, can build and increase bone strength at any age, and can do so without the risk of arthritis that can be a downside of some forms of weight bearing exercise. Using the results from this study, we will learn a series of poses that have been shown to build bone mass. Variations will be offered for each pose to make it suitable for your current state of bone health. You will leave the series with a way to protect or rehabilitate your bones and 'side effects' such as lower anxiety, increased poise, balance and confidence, and normalized blood pressure. No previous yoga experience needed for this class.

A 6 week Yoga series to establish a sound foundation for new practitioners, and help experienced practitioners move deeper into their practice with purpose and rich understanding of the human body.  Often in our daily lives we may neglect or disregard our physical bodies by the way we live, work, and even think about ourselves. Too many people in our culture accept illness, injury, or discomfort as the norm. We define health as a lack of illness, rather than working with desire toward our true imprint of health and vitality. You surely have wondered if there is a way to live at home in your body, moving through each day with energy and ease.

Blueprints offers you an opportunity to learn relevant practices to assist you in your journey toward feeling at home in your body, with a peaceful, clear mind and spirit. In this 6 week course, we will explore anatomy, breathing, posture, and Yoga Asana, giving you the confidence to practice and progress safely, receiving rich benefits from your efforts.  You do not need any prior experience in Yoga to join this group. A desire to learn and explore the human body will allow you to enjoy this workshop. Experienced practitioners may attend with a desire for applying these universal principles to improve the quality of their personal practice, opening to new opportunities to work with a deeper level of awareness. Participants with medical diagnoses or significant pain should consult with the teacher and their doctor/physical therapist before registration.

Heart Yoga

Cost: $20 per class or $50 for the series

Heart Yoga: The Sacred Marriage of Yoga and Mysticism by Andrew Harvey and Karuna Erickson jumped off the bookstore shelf into my life, and I am finding it truly a gem. Here is what Seane Corn, yoga teacher, Global Yoga ambassador for Youth AIDS, and co-visionary for “Off the Mat, Into the World” has to say about it:

“Andrew Harvey and Karuna Erickson have written an inspirational and passionate guide recognizing modern-day yogis as mystics on the mat. . . This is a magnificent and timely book affirming that the scared practice of yoga is a journey of personal illumination, universal recognition, mystical unification, and the inevitable understanding that it is love and action that can transform this planet from one of fear and separation into one united by love, truth, and God.”

In the introduction they write: “The profound meaning and precious gift of yoga is its source in the unity of body and spirit. . . Yoga's great inspiration is that it expresses, in both philosophy and practice, the Sacred Marriage of transcendence and immanence, heaven and earth, masculine and feminine, spirit and body. All the seeming dualities unite as One. . .”

The book describes how we can focus and dedicate our asana practice, provides sacred writings from many traditions to nourish that practice, and offers practice sequences for celebrating aspects of the joy of consciously marrying body and spirit in our practice. Some of you have already experienced one or more of the beautiful Savasana descriptions in my classes.

Over the course of the next months I will be leading practices about once a month based on the practices in Heart Yoga. If you would like a consciously spiritually focused asana class, or a path for awakening the heart to love, or a way to use your yoga practice as the source of energy for your work in the world, you may want to experience Heart Yoga.

With attention to breath synchronization, to mantra, or to the chakras, the sun salutation can become a meditative experience.
